Chapter 5

Robert wasn’t a part of the team that was at the table for the defendant. They only allowed a few to sit at what a lot of attorneys he knew called the big boy table, and he’d opted out so that he could keep an eye on the players. He also got to sit by his mom and Elizabeth while William and Sherman had drawn the longest straws. Literally, what they’d done to figure out who was going to be sitting with Gilbert Hamilton, the VP who was the lead in all this mess.

They’d prepared for a week before the attorney for the state of Louisiana had filed that Lance was guilty of murdering his sister. How anyone could have said that after spending ten minutes with the man was a mystery. The attorney for the other side, the state of Louisiana, didn’t look all that thrilled with being at any table, much less the one with the mayor and the governor there with her. As soon as the judge, a Federal Judge, because of the VP being there, was seated, Gilbert stood up.

“Your honor, I’d like a moment of your time, please, in private.” He told him he was currently busy at the moment. “Yes, I can see that I have the utmost respect for you taking on this trial on such short notice, but I have only just uncovered something that I should make you aware of.”

“Will it make this go a bit quicker, Gilly? I have to tell you, being pulled from my retirement isn’t anything that I was happy about.” Gilbert told him that he understood, but it would only take a moment if he’d just do this in his office. “That important, is it? Well, let’s get this over with. I won’t be happy if I have to be coming out here and telling everyone that we’re going to be here for weeks at a time. Not one bit.”

“I hope that it doesn’t come to that either, sir.” While huffing all the way to his room, Gilbert asked Ms. Avery Porter if she’d join them. “I want to be clear and upfront on this for all the people involved, Ms. Porter. If you’d like to come with us, I think this will clear a great many things up for your client.”

She simply stared at him for a moment or two, then she glanced at William. The two of them had been bickering since William showed up with mismatched shoes. He didn’t know why it bothered her more than it did his brother, but he was good-natured about a lot of things, and she just seemed like a bitch.

William was asked to go in with them, as was he. Robert knew the passwords without having to fumble through them, and William was the person who had been decided to explain what was going on with the recordings of not just the night that Lannie had been killed. It appeared that it was also a great many previous nights when Lannie had been working alone in her shop.
